Best Small Ship Adventure Cruises 2024 2025

sail boat cruise

‍Whether you are making a voyage from one coast of the United States to the other or plan to make your way around the globe, a decent cruising sailboat is a must. Not all sailboats are built to withstand the high seas and high winds of the open water. If possible, avoid traveling to this area in August. Very crowded and hot...We learned that August is not the time to do this trip. Way too hot this time of year (mid 90’s with high humidity).

Vanautu & Fiji Cruises

100+ combined years of experience, 7 continents explored, decades of expedition cruising around the world & here to help you find & book your dream trip. This was not an objective but really enjoyed that aspect of it. We did benefit from the end of season in that it was not crowded and one group on the boat had their own guide but mingled very well. It may be helpful to prepare by reading a little about the sites, pack a few snacks for those long to lunch time days and enjoy.

Booking with the cruise company guarantees your return to the ship, even if your excursion runs late. As a bonus, arriving early also gives you a chance to explore the city. It was nice meeting people from all over world, with like minded interest. A great Crew is the centerpiece of any all-inclusive charter, and our expert Crews are some of the best in the industry. SPECIALITY CRUISES SECTION

Carrying 166 passengers apiece, the smaller vessels were designed to resemble the speedy clipper ships of the 19th century, which were known for their narrow profile and large sail area. Each vessel has a sail area of 36,000 square feet spread across 16 sails, a large amount for the size. Transatlantic and transpacific sailings offer plenty of relaxing sea days and stops at must-visit cruise destinations. Go from colourful Caribbean towns to iconic European capitals, or explore bazaars, exotic isles and dense rainforests in regions like the Arabian Gulf, the South Pacific and Latin America.

Galileo

Being Greek-owned and operated since 1992, she brings a lot of history and a connected, authentic crew. Her itineraries focus solely on the best of the Greek Islands. At only 157 feet, she can dock right downtown in small ports that are off limits to big cruise ships. And she’s small enough to visit authentic small ports like Folegandros, Paros and Syros that highlight Greece’s archeological treasures and fascinating culture.

The welcome dinner and the captains dinner was excellent. Also enjoyed having the chance to try out the local restaurants, and local wine and beer. It was truly outstanding, especially for a group of this size. There were always choices; food was plentiful and varied.

It is British made so finding one in the States can be a little tricky. If you do find one though you would do well to jump at the chance to purchase it. The sense of adventure and discovery is like nothing else.

SOUTH PACIFIC CRUISES

The tours are usually led by locals, which means the guides can also give you some good recommendations if you have time before you need to return to the ship. South Pacific cruises are the perfect way to embrace exotic island life. Explore dramatic coastlines and emerald green jungles. And immerse yourself in the diverse cultures and untamed fauna that make each island so unique. A land of rugged mountains, coastal forests and diverse wildlife, Alaska is the ultimate cruise destination for intrepid explorers. Whether you're watching whales splash in the Pacific Ocean or gazing up at Hubbard Glacier, Alaska cruises are all about wild natural wonder.

The Galileo is one of our most popular small ships cruising the Mediterranean, and for many reasons. Although she is a motorsailer, she has the charm of a historic Mediterranean sailing vessel. She primarily cruises under power, with sails raised occasionally when weather and route allow.

Sailing through the Corinth Canal was a nice experience too. This wasn't described on the original itinerary, so I wasn't prepared to know what to look for here. Apparently, the ship passes here in the night when the itinerary is followed the other way around the Peloponnese. Activities seemed to be shopping (never interesting for more than a few minutes) and hiking to the top of the rock. (This would probably have been fine, if I'd been prepared with hiking boots and a walking stick, but not knowing what to expect, I wasn't). Choose from over 15 amazing destinations throughout the Mediterranean, Caribbean, Americas and Exotics.

Strength doesn’t just mean material but the overall build of the boat. If a boat doesn’t have a strong mast, the sail is more likely to come down. A sailboat without a mast or sail is much more likely to capsize. If a sailboat is capable of housing you for a few days, technically it can be classed as a cruising sailboat.

If you're looking for a unique excursion that still gives you the highlights of a European city, I recommend booking a food tour. I've done tours in places like Amsterdam, Budapest, and Paris, and I've never been disappointed. My biggest tip for any cruise — but especially for Americans traveling to Europe for a Mediterranean cruise — is to arrive at your embarkation city at least a day before your sailing starts. Discover captivating natural beauty, rich history and culture on our European cruises – like Rome’s ancient ruins, Russia’s golden-domed churches and Norway’s majestic fjords.

What was supposed to be hot was hot; what was supposed to be cold was cold. The only problem was a buffet meal served when the boat was underway in turbulent water. It was impossible to walk with food, even though the staff tried hard to help. [I  most enjoyed the] Ancient theater at Epidaurus, Olympia and Delphi. These are amazing ancient places that I'd heard about for a long time. They were beautiful in the springtime with blossoming trees and wildflowers all about.

Contact us or your local travel agent to find out more. For the comfort and pleasure of our guests, our itineraries generally follow warm rather than hot weather patterns. The world's climate being at times unpredictable, our small ships are seldom far from a sheltered bay or port. There’s a reason Croatia’s been crowned the darling of Europe! Cruise through the pristine waters of the Adriatic and taste the best of the country’s bountiful coastline. Visit rolling vineyards for wine tastings, dine on barbecue dinners on the deck of your ship, sample locally produced honey on a Croatian farm and stroll through fragrant fields of lavender.
